The purpose of this programme is to identify, map and maintain cultural heritage resources within the Protected Environment. The National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA) No 25 of 1999 provides the framework for the maintenance and conservation of heritage resources in accordance with the standards and procedures set out by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). The Protected Environment aims to create an inventory of the cultural and heritage sites of the Protected Environment and identify which sites need active management. The results of this work should be entered into a geographic information system (GIS) database to facilitate monitoring and management.
